I’m not much of a fashion plate. Comfort and utility have always been higher on my criteria list for clothing than fashion has been. Yet the Word of God is very clear – clothes make the man.
Jesus teaches of the paramount importance of clothes in the Parable of the Wedding Feast of the Son (Matt 22:1-14). Jesus likened the kingdom of heaven to the marriage celebration/feast of the king’s son. Twice the king sent his servants to invite his subjects to his son’s wedding. Twice his subjects declined, the second time murderously so. The feast was already prepared (Eph 1:3-6) so the king sent more servants out to all the “whosoevers” in the land (John 3:14-17, John 4:14, John 11:25-26, John 12:46). All was well, except for one man who probably opted for self-comfort and self-utility in his clothes. His choice of clothes offended the king. Unable to justify himself (Luke 16:14-15, Job 9:20), the man was immediately removed forever from the presence of the king (Acts 17:22-31).
The marriage feast of the Son. Many are invited but a scant few are chosen to participate. And clearly, clothes have everything to do with being chosen.
We cannot dress any way we want to and expect to gain entrance into God’s kingdom (Matt 5:20). “No shirt, no shoes, no service” has an eternal counterpart. Even our “Sunday best” clothes are not good enough (Is 64:6), designer labels and all (Matt 19:16-24). At the Marriage Feast of the Son, garments of praise (Is 61:3), garments of salvation and robes of righteousness (Is 61:10) must be worn. The only acceptable clothing in the kingdom of heaven is the righteousness of the Son, Jesus Christ (Matt 19:25-26, Rom 10:4, Eph 4:20-24, Rev 3:4-5, Rev 3:18, Rev 4:1-4, Rev 19:6-8).
No man, not even Bill Gates, can afford such fine clothes (Rom 3:10-23, Acts 20:28). The only way to have the proper garments is to receive them as a gift from the Giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17, Eph 2:8-9, Rom 1:16-17,Rom 4:1-5, Titus 3:3-5, Heb 11:6).
Clothes cannot be earned or bought. Clothes are not inherited. Clothes are not issued to groups. Clothes are intensely personal and are given to one man at a time. Clothes are everything; they make the man.
You will love the clothes given to those who receive them by faith. I guarantee it!
